The Gully is North America’s largest undersea canyon and is home to a vast variety of life, including the endangered northern bottlenose whale and a rainbow of deep-sea corals.

At the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (1675 Lower Water Street, Halifax), from 9:30 am – 1:00 pm, immerse yourself in the wonders of the Gully ecosystem! You can see the Gully up close with a 3D underwater map, experience weird and wonderful creatures, and learn about them from the experts who work to study and protect them every day.  With many things to see and do, you can choose your own adventure and even make an ocean-themed Mother’s Day gift!  Come celebrate 20 years of The Gully, eastern Canada’s oldest MPA! May 3 event

Tentacles in the Deep Sea: In a virtual seminar at 10:00 a.m. on Friday May 3, listen marine scientist Dr. Trevor Kenchington as he discusses the cephalopods (such as Squid) that call the Gully home. You can use this link to join this MS Teams seminar May 3! 

May 7 event

Sailors, Whalers, Coral forests & Tourists in the Gully: In-person at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (1675 Lower Water Street, Halifax) at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, learn about the curious human history of the Gully MPA from Marine Geographer Paul Macnab. Paul will provide an illustrated talk featuring highlights from the Gully’s interwoven histories of transportation, fishing, scientific inquiry, and conservation.

May 11th Program

  • 9:30am – Opening 
  • 9:30am - 1:00pm – Explore the mysteries of the Gully and the deep sea! Visit displays and learn about our amazing ocean and the diversity of life in an underwater canyon.  Chat and listen to ocean experts and make an ocean-themed craft for Mother’s Day!)
  • 9:45-10:00 am – Unnatural Disaster Theatre Show
  • 10:00am - 11:45am - Journey to the Gully (meet experts who study sea life in the Gully!)
  • 11:45 am - 12:00 pm – Unnatural Disaster Theatre Show - Second Showing
  • 12:00pm - 12:30pm – Happy Anniversary Celebration (snacks and refreshments)
  • 1:00pm - End of Celebrations
