Science
Whether it’s in a laboratory or the open ocean, the Regional Science team conducts research and monitoring throughout the Maritimes Region. We also generate advice and products to support safe navigation and the sustainable management of Canadian fisheries and oceans. We do this in partnership with other federal agencies, academics, industry, Indigenous and coastal communities.
What we do
We generate knowledge on marine species, freshwater species, and diadromous species (that is, fish that spend parts of their lives in both fresh and salt water). We use this information to provide science advice for fisheries and species at risk.
We work to better understand and mitigate human activities, such as aquaculture, on fish stocks, species distributions, habitats and the food web.
We do research, monitoring, analysis and reporting in our bioregion to inform marine conservation planning and management. We also help Canadians better understand our important marine ecosystems.
Oceans and climate change science
We monitor changing ocean conditions, conduct research into climate vulnerability, and refine ocean models to better understand climate impacts.
We support the safe, sustainable and navigable use of Canada’s waterways through increasingly modernized technologies.
